Campaign to gain more cyberspace for malayalam

REPORT ON Date: 09-06-2008

LDF Government kicked off a strategic campaign to deploy Malayalam computing across the State through its network of more than 3000 Akshaya Centres. This scheme is expected to break linguistic barriers in the use of information technology and communication technology. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the campaign at Kannur on 8th June, 2008.

Malayalam Web portals

The campaign for Malayalam computing proposes to enable those communicating in Malayalam to use Internet services such as e-mail, chat and blog in Malayalam and ultimately facilitate rich Malayalam content on the web.

The first ever initiative in the Indian languages, this campaign envisions a world wide Malayalam community in two or three years using ICT services with as much felicity as the English educated people now use them. A web portal of Malayalam computing and community portals of several local self-government bodies in Kannur district were also launched on the day. These portals were developed by Akshaya Project with the assistance of UNESCO for taking ICT to the masses. The Akshaya centres will carry out programmes under the campaigns to train people in using Malayalam computers. The campaign in which the local bodies and social organisation will participate hopes to reach out to 50 lakh households in the State.

Web portal for Panchayats

Software modules are to be made available through a web portal set up. The objective is to make sure that all computers sold in Kerala are Malayalam enabled. The government will further support the campaign with efforts to increase Malayalam content on the web. Soon each Panchayat will have a web portal, providing information on its natural and human resources and whatever ICT facilities are relevant to community life. Azheekode panchayat has already developed one such portal.

IT to benefit common man

Inaugurating the campaign, the Chief Minister said that with the first phase of the campaign people would become aware of the immense possibilities of Malayalam in computing. The policy of the Government is that development of IT also benefited the common man. The objective of Malayalam computing campaign is not only to strengthen Malayalam but also to ensure that benefits of IT reached all sections.
