Addressing Food Security Concerns
The State cabinet felt that the provisions of the Food Security Act of the Central Government are against the interests of the State. The decision of the Union Government to reduce the ration limit for BPL families from 35 kg. to 25 kg is not at all helpful in the food situation available in the State. The decision to fix the number of BPL families to only 10 lakh is fraught with danger and it cannot be approved. The decision to exclude APL families from the statutory rationing is also against the interests of the State. This would destroy the public distribution system and result in starvation. In this context the State Government is organizing a meeting of all Sate Food Ministers at Thiruvananthapuram to address the food security concerns of States.
